Laura Wilder – Block Printing

A Rochester NY native, Laura got her BA in Studio Art from Hamilton College and a diploma from a local commercial art school. She then worked for several years as a graphic designer, art director, and commercial illustrator. Eventually, weary of cheesy advertising concepts and brutal deadlines, she decided to quit the world of advertising and try becoming a real artist.

At about that time she discovered the styles and ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement (c.1890 - 1920). Inspired by its emphasis on reviving the handicraft and living a simpler, more natural life, she took a few printmaking courses at a local college, and became a Roycroft Renaissance Artisan. Her prints are made with the look and techniques of a century ago, and express the themes of the Arts and Crafts Movement. That was about 12 years ago. Laura continues to make limited edition block prints (using a wooden spoon as a press) and hand-made limited edition serigraphs (screen prints). She is represented by many galleries and shops across the US, and has been featured in Style 1900 Antiques & Interiors magazine.

She exhibits her work in national juried Arts & Crafts conferences each year, and occasionally offers printmaking demonstrations and workshops. Laura is also busy with commissioned paintings and prints, and is supported by a fabulous office manager, a lovely new husband, a pile of great kids, and a cat.
