presents              What: Painting on Silk ~ with Roycroft Renaissance Artisan, Kristine Baker When: Saturday July 26, 2008          10:00 am - 4:00 pm Where: The Copper Shop Gallery - Located on the national historic landmark              Roycroft Campus at  31 South Grove Street in East Aurora, NY  14052   About:   Roycroft Renaissance Artisan, Kristine Baker, will be teaching a one-day workshop in painting on silk. The focus of this workshop is to create beautiful patterns and textures on silk. Students will be encouraged to expand their design and color mixing skills throughout the workshop. The workshop project can be used to make a very unique wall hanging (suitable for framing), fashion fabric swatches or fabric that can be incorporated into quilts. All materials will be provided so that each student can create three 10” hoops during class time and an additional three 10” hoops are provided for you to work at home after the workshop. Other supplies include: 4 bottles of basic dye colours, 6 hoops with stretched silk fabric, silk salt, 2 sumi brushes, a palette for mixing colours, 10 small foam tipped brushes, small bottle of gold resist. Weather permitting, the heliographic method will also be taught. Heliographic is activated by the sun. After painting the fabric, students can lay objects on their fabric, (such as; lace, feathers, plant leaves, etc) and set it in the sun. After a brief time the colour develops and the blocked areas are white creating a most unique pattern or design. The instructor will provide heliographic colours that will only be available during class time. Due to the dyes being used, it is recommended that students dress in old clothes. Instructor:   Kristine Baker grew up in the Los Angeles area of California. Kristine holds a Masters of Education degree with certificates in Art and English and has taught at every level. Having lived abroad in both Europe and Mexico City, Kristine settled in Upstate New York. While working as a color analyst, she was introduced to painting on silk. Kristine says, “I suppose the rest is history … I am totally in love with color and silk! Silk painting is spontaneous and unpredictable; there are effects possible that cannot be achieved either with oils or watercolors. The medium stands alone.” Kristine has been painting on silk for over twenty-five years, is currently represented by four galleries/shops and was recently awarded the designation of a Roycroft Renaissance Artisan in fiber/textiles.
