A PROCLAMATION WAS SUBMITTED BY
LEGISLATORS MARINELLI, MILLS, KENNEDY, GRANT, MAZUR, IANNELLO,    LOUGHRAN & RATH

RE:     Congratulating WNED and the Roycroft Campus Corporation on the
           National Broadcast Premiere of “Elbert Hubbard − An American Original” on PBS

 

            WHEREAS, on Monday, November 23, 2009, PBS will broadcast the National Premiere of the documentary titled,
“Elbert Hubbard: An American Original,” and

            WHEREAS, Elbert Hubbard − who with his wife, Alice, perished in the sinking of the Lusitania prior to World War I −
was an influential author, publisher, lecturer and entrepreneur who attracted master craftspeople and numerous dignitaries
to the Roycroft Campus; and

            WHEREAS, Hubbard founded the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, following a successful career
with the Larkin Soap Company in Buffalo; and

            WHEREAS, the Roycroft community was at the forefront of a movement that rejected mechanized industrialism and
emphasized hand-crafting simple designs for everyday objects; and

            WHEREAS, Hubbard is best known as the publisher of A Message to Garcia, a tome that after its initial mass printing,
sold more copies worldwide than any other book besides the Bible and the dictionary; and

            WHEREAS, the PBS documentary will raise the national cultural tourism profile of the Roycroft Campus, serving as
the fuel for an economic engine that will benefit the entire Buffalo region; and

            WHEREAS, The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation funded the documentary, whose executive producers were John Grant
and David Rotterman; and was directed and written by WNED Senior Producer Paul Lamont as “a story of love, art, passion and
controversy set against the backdrop of the Arts and Crafts Movement,” − a story destined to be as well received nationally as
Lamont’s acclaimed work, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

            RESOLVED, that upon the occasion of the national broadcast premiere on PBS of “Elbert Hubbard: An American Original”
on Monday, November 23, 2009, the Erie County Legislature pause in its deliberations to congratulate Donald K. Boswell, WNED
President and CEO; Sylvia Bennett, Senior Vice President, Development; Doug Swift, President, and Christine Peters, Executive
Director of the Roycroft Campus Corporation and all those involved in the making of this wonderful documentary produced by
WNED and funded by The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation.
