Buffalo’s Forgotten Regiment … Remembered

¨ Ever wonder how one creates a large bronzed sculpture like the Civil War Monument at the Naval Park in Buffalo , NY ? Creator and sculptor, Henry Schmidt has a presentation and video documenting the entire process from concept sketches thru installation.

¨The bronze casting was done at UB and moved to its permanent location on the Walk of Heroes in the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park in Buffalo .

Gary Costello, a Civil War re-enactor will proudly provide the forgotten history of the 155th.

"My design depicts common Civil War infantry soldiers standing ready to defend our nation's flag, symbolizing the vigilance freedom requires. The flag also extends forward, beyond the edge of the monument as if to offer freedom to all.

By honoring the 155th, our heritage is remembered through recognition of their great sacrifice."   Henry Schmidt, Sculptor.

Henry Schmidt has been a successful artist for over 30 years.  He received a degree in painting and illustration from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in art education from Buffalo State Collage.  His career includes art education, illustration, television and production.  Henry Schmidt is currently the Director of the product art and sculpture at Fisher-Price toys.

Gary Costello is retired from a 20 year career with Erie County Dept of Health.  Currently acts as the President of the Hull House Foundation and Director of the Hull Family Home & Farmstead.  Mr. Costello, a life long resident of Buffalo , is married with three children and is a 16 year veteran of the Civil War reenacting with the 155th NY Volunteer Infantry Regime and past president for 5 years.
