Welcome to The Fletcherizer, where we chew over the history, ideas, and personalities of the Roycroft Campus. Each month our team will dive into a Roycroftie topic, with plenty of features from our historic archive throughout the month. Stay tuned for a new feature each Friday, May’s topic is: The Lusitania
The Fletcherizer Volume 4 Number 2

The sinking of the RMS Lusitania caused a shock across the globe. The above issue of the Boston Evening Globe, published at 7:30pm on May 7th, 1915, comes from our historic archives. Elbert Hubbard is mentioned on the front page (box in red).

The very faded print reads:
Elbert Hubbard “Now Able to Do Kaiser Justice”
Elbert Hubbard, publisher of the Philistine, said when he boarded the Lusitania at New York that if he was on board the liner when she was torpedoed he would be able to do the Kaiser justice in his magazine.
*Fletcherize is a term coined in the early 1900s by Dr. Horace Fletcher, meaning to chew one’s food properly for better health. Elbert Hubbard would adopt the term to represent chewing one’s thoughts before speaking.
