Gyotaku – Japanese Fish Printing class
with Artist, Janet Nye Vedder
Saturday, February 18th from 10:00am – 1:00pm
The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY
Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice that dates to the mid-1800’s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches but has also become a popular art form of its own.
In this class, we will use latex molds as our printing plates – not real fish! There will be a variety of different fish molds to choose from, as well as other sea creatures such as starfish, seahorse fish, and seaweed. Students will learn about composition, color, and how to create a monoprint using Sumi ink and washi paper.
Students should bring a sketchbook for practice and taking notes. All other tools and materials necessary for this class are provided. Individuals may also bring a tee shirt, apron, tote, or other materials if you would like to experiment printing on fabric. Lunch will not be supplied. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch or something to snack on.
Janet Nye Vedder has experience as a graphic artist, product illustrator, and art educator. With a Masters in Education and twenty-two years of experience teaching art, she looks forward to teaching a variety of art classes on the Roycroft Campus.
