Intro to Roycroft Printing & Bookmaking workshop
with Roycroft Campus Program Director, Alan Nowicki
Friday, September 8th from 10:00am – 12:00pm
The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY
Elbert Hubbard, inspired by William Morris, built the Roycroft Campus on the belief of creating high-quality, handmade books in the Arts & Crafts style. This workshop will walk students through the same steps that the Roycrofters used to create a book, in many of the same spaces. Starting in the Press Room, the class will learn the process of typesetting and run an original press. Next, the class will move to an upper room in the Print Shop where guests will learn about the terms and tools of bookbinding, and each create a 6” x 9” journal using the same techniques the Roycrofters used in making their magazine The Philistine, bound in faux leather. The supply fee will cover all materials necessary for the class. Additional tools will be provided and remain the property of the instructor.
A regular speaker on Elbert Hubbard and the Roycroft, Alan Nowicki has been the Program Director at the Roycroft Campus since 2010, after working on a project about Elbert Hubbard for PBS. He has developed educational programs for adults and children including tours, workshops, the Campus art shows, the Roycroft Film Society and Book Club. He has 15 years of experience working in professional development and community outreach and has been a teacher for more than 25 years, having taught in every grade level from Pre-K through college, specializing in art and history.
