When Elbert Hubbard was killed in the sinking of the Lusitania, no one knew what would happen to the Roycroft Campus. It was up to Elbert Hubbard II to take the reins. The first child of Elbert and Bertha Hubbard, Elbert II (known as Bert), would find himself in charge of the Roycroft without it’s charismatic leader, and he knew the enormous task before him. Stating,
“There is no Second Elbert Hubbard. To five hundred Roycrofters, to the Village of East Aurora, and to a few dozen personal friends scattered over the face of the earth, I am Bert Hubbard, plain Bert Hubbard–and as Bert Hubbard I want to be known to you.”
“I lay no claim to having inherited Elbert Hubbard’s Genius, his Personality, his Insight into the Human Heart. I am another and totally different sort of man.”
But Bert would go on to run the Roycroft longer than his father, as well as becoming the mayor of the town. This presentation will examine how Bert ran the Roycroft and his life after the Campus closed.
This presentation will be offered both in-person on Thursday, October 17th at 7:00pm in the Roycroft Power House, and virtually Saturday afternoon, October 19th at 11:00am .
You may attend either or both presentations
