Lino & Letterpress: Bookplate class – July 20, 2024

Linocut & Letterpress: Bookplate workshop

with Artist, Necole Witcher
Saturday, July 20th from 10:30am – 3:00pm

The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY

What could possibly be more Roycroft than printing and books, or in this case printing a bookplate. A bookplate is a “label” that is attached to the inside cover of a book to inform who is the owner of the manuscript. Bookplates were historically custom designed for their owners, who almost always wanted their bookplates to reflect their interests, aspirations, or social standings. In other words, bookplates are works of art that reflect the personal style, preference, and/or philosophy of the owner. Since 1480, bookplates encouraged a borrower to return a book after reading and became immensely popular during the apex of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

In this class, students will create a 4 x 6-inch design, or use one provided, carve and print a set of bookplates for their most cherished books using the linocut method. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge. The raised areas are then inked and pressed to paper to create a print.

All tools will be provided including carving tools, linoblocks, ink, paper as well as the Poco Press in the Roycroft Print Shop. Paper will be supplied for up to ten prints per person. You are welcome to bring your own paper if it is certified for block printing. Carving takes some endurance and uses sharp tools and is therefore appropriate for ages 16 and up. We encourage you to bring snacks; beverages will be available. You are also welcome to bring your own linocut tools and knife-cutting gloves.
