Linocut & Letterpress Printing class – April 27, 2024

Linocut & Letterpress Printing workshop
with Artist, Necole Witcher
Saturday, April 27th from 11:00am – 3:30pm
The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY
Design, carve, and print a set of cards or small poster using analog presses in the historic Roycroft Print Shop. You can also add a short typeset message. Bring a 4” x 6” design that will take about 3 hours to carve or use one of the available templates.
A linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface that was popularized by Picasso and used by Roycrofters in the early 20th century. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge. The raised areas are then inked and pressed to paper to create a print.
All tools will be provided including carving tools, linoblocks, ink, paper as well as the Poco Press in the Roycroft Print Shop. Paper will be supplied for up to ten prints per person. If you are making cards, envelopes are NOT provided. You are welcome to bring your own paper if it is certified for block printing. Carving takes some endurance and uses sharp tools and is therefore appropriate for ages 16 and up. We encourage you to bring snacks; beverages will be available. You are also welcome to bring your own linocut tools and knife-cutting gloves.
Necole has haunted the Illumination Studio and Press Room in the Roycroft Print Shop and crafting her way from apprentice to master since 2014.
