Linocut Reduction – Autumn Revelry class – October 19, 2024

Linocut Reduction – Autumn Revelry workshop

with Artist, Necole Witcher
Saturday, October 19th from 10:00am – 4:00pm

The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY

Warm up your pumpkin carving skills with this reduction linocut (Beginner to Mid-beginner) class. This technique uses just one block to create several layers of color. Once the first layer is carved and printed you then return to the same block and carve into it for the next layer. Whatever is carved away will allow the previous color to show through. With each layer, more and more of the surface is cut away creating prints that are unrepeatable and unique.

The image above is the same design we will use as a template, but there is plenty of room for customization. Consider printing the template in advance and sketching some ideas for the field or details on the silhouettes.

It is useful to have some experience with carving wood or linoleum but is not necessary. Paper, ink, brayers and two basic carving blades will be supplied for everyone. Purchasing a higher quality set of blades is encouraged (Click to view the suggested supply list). Carving takes some endurance and uses sharp tools and is therefore appropriate for ages 16 and up. Please feel free to bring snacks & beverages. You are also welcome to bring your own linocut tools and knife-cutting gloves. This class is in anticipation of an exciting wood carving class pending in early 2025 with an incredible guest teacher.

Necole has haunted the Illumination Studio and Press Room in the Roycroft Print Shop and crafting her way from apprentice to master since 2014.
