Chris Liberti will be teaching a one-day collage in acrylics workshop centered around constructing a painting through composition, shape, color, and value. The course is designed for all levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced students. The day will focus instruction on materials, composition, approaches, and various collaging and painting techniques.

We will begin with an intuitive approach, working quickly in broad movements with large brushes, searching for the essence of what we are seeing and feeling. Then we will paint strips of paper which will be cut into shapes based off our subject’s colors and values. The painted paper will be applied atop our first layer of paint, allowing our compositions to develop shape by shape. Our search for a compelling composition will take precedence over simply copying our subjects. We will be working on two paintings at the same time. You can use the same subject for both or choose 2 different ones.

Here are some subject recommendations: still life – bring in your own objects (3 or more objects plus fabrics), interior or exterior views from the studio, copy a favorite painter’s work, a black and white photo where you choose your own colors, bring a painting of yours and make a collage version, paint your neighbor (with permission), paint your lunch (before you eat it).

All materials and mediums will be “non-hazardous”. We will be using a limited palette with both mediums, please click for a Supply List. Lunch will not be supplied. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch or something to snack on.

Raised and educated on the East Coast, Chris Liberti studied Fine Arts (painting) at Buffalo State College. He shows extensively both nationally and internationally including England, New York, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Washington, and Georgia. He has taught workshops throughout the US and Italy. He has been exhibiting in East Aurora at Meibohm Fine Arts since 2016 and is a studio member of the Castiglia Art Center at the Roycroft Campus.
