Watercolor: Negative Painting – August 23 & 30, 2023

Watercolor: Negative Space

with Juried Artist, Paulette Krakowski
2-Day Workshop on Wednesdays, August 23rd & 30th from 10:00am – 1:00pm

The Roycroft Campus – 21 South Grove St. East Aurora, NY

What is negative painting? It’s just the process of painting around your subject to make it stand out in your composition. When you paint the actual subject, that’s positive painting, when you paint around the subject, that is negative painting.  Knowing how to do this technique will add so much to your watercolors!

The first class, students will learn the step-by-step layering technique of negative watercolor painting. A pencil drawing on watercolor paper will be given to each student to practice this method.  The second class will begin a new watercolor painting, 5×7 in size – composing a design in elements of nature while continuing to work in the style of negative painting. All supplies will be provided; watercolor paints, watercolor brushes, water containers, paper towels, and 140lb watercolor paper. Tools will remain the property of the instructor. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch or something to snack on.

Paulette Krakowski has over 40 years of experience as a graphic artist, art director, instructor, and gallery owner.  In 2022 she became a Juried Artist of the Arts & Craftsmen Guild of the Roycroft Campus in watercolor and colored pencil.
