The Roycroft Film Society invites you to a screening of the classic Film Noir, The Night of the Hunter. Featuring Robert Mitchum’s formidable performance as a child-hunting preacher and his iconic “Love – Hate” speech. The Rev. Harry Powell (Mitchum) is a religious fanatic and criminal who targets women who use their sexuality to attract men. Serving time in prison for car theft, he meets condemned murderer Ben Harper, who confesses to hiding $10,000 in stolen loot. Released from jail, Powell is obsessed with finding the money, and tries to track down Harper’s widow, Willa (Shelley Winters), and her two children. Also featuring silent screen star Lillian Gish.
Despite receiving negative reviews upon its original release, it has been positively re-evaluated in later decades and is now considered one of the greatest films ever made. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1992. Roger Ebert wrote, “It is one of the most frightening of movies, with one of the most unforgettable of villains.” It currently holds a 93% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
