The Roycroft Campus Film Society invites you to a screening of the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, as we continue our exploration of some of the great director’s of the world that the Film Society has never screened. This month we journey to England and the director/producer team of Powell and Pressburger, known collectively as The Archers, the name of their production company.

In this classic dance drama, Vicky Page (a dazzling Moira Shearer in her film debut) is an aspiring ballerina torn between her dedication to dance and her desire to love. While her imperious instructor, Boris Lermontov, urges her to forget anything but ballet, Vicky begins to fall for the charming young composer Julian Craster. Eventually Vicky, under great emotional stress, must choose to pursue either her art or her romance, a decision that carries serious consequences.

Upon its release, the film received critical acclaim, especially in the United States, where it received five Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Original Score and Art Direction.  In 1999, the British Film Institute ranked it as the 9th greatest British film of all time. In 2017, a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics ranked it the 5th best British film ever. Filmmakers such as Brian De Palma, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Speilberg have named it one of thier all-time favorite films. The film currently has a 99% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Red Shoes will be shown on the second Sunday in June, the 9th at 4:00 pm at Roycroft Power House, 39 South Grove St. in East Aurora. Please join us and stay for the discussion afterwards.
