The Roycroft Campus Film Society continues to travel around the world. This month we head down under for a picnic in Australia. Picnic at Hanging Rock directed by Peter Weir, was a landmark of the then-emerging Australian New Wave of cinema, and is often considered the best movie to ever come from that continent.

Based on the 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, the story takes place in the early 1900s, at a girls boarding school in Australia. One Valentine’s Day, the school’s typically strict headmistress treats the girls to a picnic field trip to an unusual but scenic volcanic formation called Hanging Rock. Despite rules against it, several of the girls venture off. It’s not until the end of the day that the faculty realizes the girls and one of the teachers have mysteriously disappeared.

Upon it’s release in August of 1975 it was well received by both audiences and critics, and helped draw attention to the emerging Australian film industry. “Visually mesmerizing, Picnic at Hanging Rock is moody, unsettling, and enigmatic — a masterpiece of Australian cinema and a major triumph for director Peter Weir.” Roger Ebert called it “a film of haunting mystery and buried sexual hysteria.” In 1996, it was voted the best  Australian film of all time by members of the Australian film industry. It currently has a 93% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Picnic at Hanging Rock will be shown on the second Sunday in October, the 11th at 4:00 pm at Roycroft Power House, 39 South Grove St. in East Aurora. Please join us and stay for the discussion afterwards
