Wendy Bale is a paper artist and environmentalist in Jamestown, New York. Through her paper cuts, she tells stories about life in the wilds of Western New York and Pennsylvania. A member of Guild of American Papercutters, she again and again unearths new techniques in this diverse medium. Employing various styles from layered paper cuts to 3D paper sculpture, her art celebrates the versatility of paper. A tribute to Wendy’s other passion-drawing-some pieces also include elements of graphite or charcoal.
“For this body of work, I chose a color palette inspired by the works of William Morris. My preliminary drawings and paintings became my patterns and then, using a variety of archival papers, I got to work with knives and scissors. Regardless the method I’m using, my joy is to connect with the viewer through the mutual love of favorite nature subjects.”
LifeSlice is Wendy’s third collaborative show with her husband, “Sandhill” Bill Bale. Bill is a retired custom furniture maker, who, after 25 years creating Arts & Crafts Style furniture delved into River Tables as a nod to his passion for kayaking and areas waterways. Beginning with a slice of a tree, the patterns in the wood slabs form a waterway when embellished with natural stones and clear epoxy resin. Together, this collection reflects a slice of their rural lifestyle exploring the streams, woods and wildlife in this beautiful region.
This exhibition will be open in person in the Copper Shop loft during business hours, Tuesday – Saturday October 22, 2022 – January 7, 2023.
