Description
CJ Hurley has always been artistically inclined since his youth, and as a young adult he was trained and educated as a fine artist. The driving force behind Hurley’s work is creating quality handmade art imbued with meaning. CJ Hurley’s most significant and enduring influence has been Far Eastern art and cultural studies. This interest in Japanese & Chinese art coupled with the philosophical and spiritual traditions born in ancient India began as a child and continues to resonate through him and his work today. A passion for nature and his own spiritual connection to it drives the work I produce and led to his affinity with the artistic traditions of the turn of the last century – especially the Arts & Crafts movement. was immediately attracted to the Art & Crafts movement because of its indebtedness to Far Eastern art traditions. My love of the Arts & Crafts movement led me to apply as a Roycroft Renaissance artisan; I became a Roycroft Artisan in painting in 2005 and a Roycroft Master Artisan in 2008, and have worked to promote the ethics of the Arts & Crafts movement since I first aligned with it in the 1990’s.
